I seem to remember running the command dpkg -add-architecture i386
before, and as far as I could tell nothing changed. But, I ended up
getting acroread installed anyway. When I started Synaptic the
downloaded .deb file was shown as a broken package, and in trying to
resolve that packages with :i386 at the end of the package name
started showing up to be installed. In the end I ended up installing a
lot of stuff that I guess must be required to support i386 packages as
well as the acroread stuff.
